THIS YEAR'S TOURNAMENTS

Mater Dei Tourney - TBA

Central Tourney - TBA

Bartelso's Scholar Team participates in two tournaments each season. They compete in the Mater Dei  Scholastic  Competition and the Hardee's Junior High Scholar Bowl Tournament at Central High School.

Picture
The Hardee's Junior High Scholar Bowl Tournament at Central High School is a competition of schools around only Clinton County.

The Central Community High School Scholar Bowl Team and Hardee’s team up to sponsor a Junior High Scholar Bowl Tourney for the elementary schools within the boundaries of Central Community High School.

Matches begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue approximately every half-hour thereafter. They play two (2) ten-question halves per round; the round-robin format provide the teams with seven matches if all eight area schools participate.

First place trophy is offered for the winning team with the best record. The tie breaker, if needed, is determined by the most overall team points. The top ten individuals overall will receive a trophy for making the all-tournament team. Total number of correct toss-ups answered determined these individuals. Award presentations began as near as 1:00 as possible. The Hardee’s owner attends to present the trophies.

Thanks to Hardee’s the cost of the tournament’s questions and trophies is covered so that there is little cost to the junior high teams.

The tournament is similar in format to those sponsored by the IHSA.
Teams of five competed by orally scoring points for toss-up (individual) answers and for bonus (team) answers. Each match consists of 20 toss up questions, 10 per half, and a maximum of 15 bonus questions overall. The exact format is determined by the number of teams that enter, but it is in the same form of round robin.
The winner of each pool and several wild card teams (based on record and total points) advance to the championship playoff round. The next best eight teams, using the same criteria, advance to the consolation bracket. This format has been used for the last few years, and there had been positive feedback. Trophies are awarded to the top four teams in the championship bracket and the winner of the consolation bracket. Twenty all-star individuals also receive awards. Individual awards are based on the morning rounds only.
The questions used in this tournament are written by Sister John Baricevic and covered the traditional junior high curriculum, as well as computer literacy and current events. The day's activities end no later than 4:00 p.m.
