SECOND GRADE NEWSLETTER
WEEK OF FEBRUARY 20, 2012
MATH: They are learning how to subtract 2digit numbers ( with and without regrouping). Please practice this at home, especially when you have to regroup or not.
HEALTH: We are learning about a healthy heart.
SPELLING: They will learn to spell the months of the year. The words are: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December. The pretest is on Thursday, Feb. 23rd and the final is on Fri., Feb. 24th.
HANDWRITING: They are learning the cursive capital A and C.
SOCIAL STUDIES: We are studying a pie chart.
SCIENCE: They are starting Chapter 6 on weather. They will learn about different kinds of weather and the water cycle. Your child needs a 6 inch or taller , plastic cup or jar by Wednesday. We are going to make a rain gauge with it.
READING: They will review the n cluster, comparing and contrasting, the long o sound, and or and ore sounds. They will read the stories: Little Grunt and the Big Egg ( pgs. 117-126) and the story Mighty Dinosaurs ( pgs. 127-131). The vocabulary words for the stories are: disaster, earthquake, erupting, lava, pitch, volcano, allergic, swamp, rumblings------- fossils, packs, prey, remains, reptiles, roamed, crests, and grazing.
REMINDERS
· Spelling pretest on Thur., Feb. 23rd and the final is on Fri., Feb. 24th
· Study math facts, especially the subtraction
· Read daily and check their comprehension
· They are giving a speech on Friday, Feb. 24th on their favorite sandwich
· Need a plastic jar or glass for science
· No school, on Monday, Feb. 20th—Presidents’ Day
